All-In-One Cold Plunge vs Tub Plus Separate Chiller: Which Is Easier to Repair?

When a cold plunge chiller dies, an integrated system and a split setup fail differently. Real repair costs, downtime, and warranty terms, checked August 25, 2026.

Plunge Type

Quick answer: An integrated system fails as one unit. When the sealed chiller in a Plunge, Sun Home, BlueCube, Morozko, or Renu dies, you are inside that one brand's warranty and repair timeline, and only Morozko publishes a response time (72 hours on-site for PRO, XL, and Arktika). A split setup, an Ice Barrel or stock tank plus a separate chiller, never goes fully cold: the tub still holds water while a replacement chiller ships, priced from $1,949.99 (Penguin Chillers, 7,500 BTU/hr) to $3,999.99 (Ice Barrel's own chiller), and any pool or HVAC tech can fit it. Renu Therapy's own warranty is the proof of which half fails first: 5 years on the plastic body, 1 year on the chiller. The split setup is the more reliable format in the sense that matters, it never goes fully unusable, but it puts the sizing, the plumbing, and the freeze-season draining on you. Checked August 25, 2026.

Best for

Buyers who have already narrowed to a powered or unpowered lane and want to know what actually happens, and what it costs, when the chiller fails.

Wrong fit

Buyers who have not chosen a lane yet. Start with the buying guide or the ice-vs-chiller guide first.

Tradeoff

An integrated system is one purchase and one warranty relationship. A split setup never goes fully cold when its chiller dies, and lets you replace the failing half for less, but you own the sizing and the seasonal draining.

The tub almost never breaks. The chiller does.

That single fact changes the entire buying decision, and almost nobody frames it that way. Every cold plunge on the market is either an integrated system, where the chiller is sealed inside the tub you bought, or a split setup, an unpowered tub or barrel with a chiller bolted on separately. The marketing treats this as a style choice. It is actually a bet on what happens the day the compressor stops.

Quick answer

Renu Therapy's own warranty document draws the line for you: 5 years on the plastic tub body, 1 year on the water chiller. No manufacturer will say it out loud, but that is a company telling you, in a legal document, which half it expects to fail first. Everything below follows from that one fact.

Integrated vs split, side by side

Integrated (chiller sealed in the tub)Split (tub or barrel plus a separate chiller)
Failure mode when the chiller diesThe whole system loses its function. The tub still holds water, but the product you bought was "always-cold water," and that stops. The tub keeps working exactly as it did before you added a chiller: fill it, add ice, keep plunging.
Single point of failureYes. One warranty, one supply chain, one brand's repair process.No. Two components, two possible failures, but a failure in either one leaves the other fully usable.
Downtime while the chiller is downWhatever the manufacturer's claim and repair process takes. Only Morozko Forge publishes a response time: 72 hours on-site for PRO, XL, and Arktika. Everyone else does not commit to a number.Zero. Ice keeps the water cold while a replacement chiller ships, and a bolt-on unit installs in an afternoon.
Who performs the repairManufacturer-authorized service in most cases. Opening a sealed unit yourself risks the warranty.Any pool or HVAC-capable installer, or a confident DIYer, since these are quick-connect units built for exactly this kind of retrofit.
Cost to replace the cooling unit$2,299 to $3,999.99 where a brand publishes a number at all (Sun Home, Plunge, Ice Barrel, Inergize). BlueCube, Morozko, and Renu do not publish a standalone chiller price.$1,949.99 (Penguin Chillers) to $3,999.99 (Ice Barrel's own chiller), buyer's choice of unit and supplier.
Cost to replace the tub aloneNot sold this way in most lineups. Tub and chiller are priced and delivered as one SKU.Ice Barrel 300 tub alone is $1,149.99, fully separable from whatever chiller you paired it with.
Upgrade pathLocked to the brand's own accessory catalog, if one exists.Open. Swap in a bigger or smaller chiller, or a different tub, independently, the same path that turns a stock tank into a permanent setup.
ResaleNone of the eight brands in our warranty comparison publish a transferable warranty, so a used buyer inherits no coverage and cannot verify the chiller's remaining life.Tub and chiller can be sold separately. A barrel with no moving parts holds its value differently than a chiller with unknown run-hours.

How we checked this

We read each brand's own warranty document, product page, and parts or accessories catalog directly, the same method used for the warranty and serviceability comparison. Prices and specs for Penguin Chillers, Ice Barrel's own chiller, Plunge's Pro Chiller, Sun Home's Smart-Chiller, Renu's warranty terms, BlueCube's D1 product page, and Ice Barrel's chiller-ready port specification were fetched live on August 25, 2026. Plunge's help center (help.plunge.com), which hosts the actual warranty exclusion text, returned an HTTP 403 error on this run, the same block recorded on August 16, 2026, so that one claim is cited to our own prior verified reporting rather than re-read live this run, and is flagged below.

The Renu proof, in the company's own words

Renu Therapy's limited warranty states plainly: "All components under this warranty are covered for 5 years from the delivery date, except for the water chiller, which is covered for 1 year." Labor reimbursement on an approved repair is capped at $50 per hour for a maximum of two hours, about $100 total, and you have to use a Renu-approved provider.

Read that twice. A company that builds both halves of the product is telling you the chiller will very likely fail inside its first year, while the tub itself is expected to last five times as long. That is not a marketing claim. It is Renu's own risk math, and it applies to the category, not just to Renu.

The replacement chillers that make up the split lane

Two units make up most of the split-setup market, and both are quoted at current published prices, checked August 25, 2026:

  • Penguin Chillers Cold Therapy Chiller, $1,949.99. Rated at 7,500 BTU/hr cooling capacity with a 1-year warranty. Penguin's own product page says it is "designed for outdoor use in all weather conditions except freezing temperatures" and instructs owners to disconnect and drain it once the ambient temperature drops to freezing. No built-in freeze protection.
  • Ice Barrel's own chiller, $3,999.99. A true 1/2 HP unit that cools to 37F, ships with quick-connect hoses, and carries a 1-year warranty. Ice Barrel's 300 and 500 product pages list chiller-ready ports at 3/4-inch NPT with 14 TPI threads, but the page links only to Ice Barrel's own chiller and does not explicitly state that other brands' chillers will work. Get compatibility in writing before plumbing in a third-party unit.

Which brands sell a chiller separately, and which restrict what you plumb in

Selling a standalone chiller and welcoming a third-party one are two different things, and the eight brands in our directory split on both.

Brands that sell their own chiller as a standalone unit: Plunge's Pro Chiller Gen 2 is $3,490 on Plunge's site as of August 25, 2026 (regular price $3,990). Sun Home's Smart-Chiller lists at $3,599. Ice Barrel sells its own chiller at $3,999.99. Inergize's Elite Chiller is $2,690, as recorded in our warranty comparison on August 16, 2026. Selling a standalone unit at least means the chiller is a replaceable part, not a sealed mystery.

The most sealed of the eight: BlueCube's D1 houses its chilling motor inside the tub's own staircase unit, and the product page does not publish a standalone replacement price or any third-party compatibility statement. If that motor fails outside warranty, you are calling BlueCube, full stop.

The exclusion to know about: as reported in our warranty comparison (checked August 16, 2026, not independently re-readable this run since help.plunge.com again blocked automated access), Plunge's own warranty text excludes "damage as a result of installing any chiller other than the Evolve Standard Chiller." If you own a Plunge tub, plumbing in a third-party chiller is a documented way to void coverage. No other brand in our directory publishes a comparable exclusion, though several simply do not address third-party chillers at all, which is not the same as permission.

Water care is bundled differently, too

Integrated systems from brands like Plunge add filtration matched to the tub, and Pro configurations layer ozone sanitation on top of a 20-micron filter, all specified and installed by the manufacturer. A split setup gets none of that by default. Penguin's chiller ships with a pump, tubing, and fittings, but not a filter or sanitizer system. Owners of a stock tank or barrel-plus-chiller setup are running their own water-care routine, typically a manual drain-and-refill schedule, covered in the stock tank guide. Neither approach is wrong, but the split lane hands you one more system to manage yourself.

Freeze exposure: the split lane's hidden chore

A split-setup chiller sits outside the tub with exposed hose runs, and the market's most common unit has no built-in freeze protection at all. Penguin's own instructions are direct: disconnect and drain at or below freezing, or risk cracked lines. That is a seasonal chore every split-setup owner needs a plan for, covered in more depth in cold plunge in winter.

Integrated systems vary by brand rather than failing uniformly. Morozko Forge ships a heating coil as standard equipment, rated for continuous pump operation down to 10F. Plunge's optional heater accessory works only with its Standard Chiller, since the Pro Chiller is rated for indoor use only. A buyer choosing the integrated lane still has to ask this question brand by brand, but at least one option, Morozko, answers it without an add-on purchase.

Which format fits which buyer

Choose integrated if you want one phone number to call and are willing to accept whatever repair price and timeline that brand sets. You are trading repair flexibility for a single warranty relationship. Only Morozko, among the brands we checked, commits to a repair response time in writing.

Choose split if you want to control repair cost and timeline, and don't mind being your own systems integrator. You gain the ability to swap in a cheaper or better-suited chiller on your own schedule, and the tub never goes fully unusable while you do it. In exchange, you own the sizing decision, the plumbing, and the freeze-season draining that an integrated system's manufacturer would otherwise handle for you.

Neither format is the wrong buy. The mistake is not knowing which bet you are making until the chiller actually fails.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when an all-in-one cold plunge's chiller breaks?

You lose the tub's core function, always-cold water, until the manufacturer resolves your claim. Warranty terms and any published repair timeline vary widely by brand: Morozko Forge is the only one of the eight brands we checked that commits to a response time in writing, 72 hours on-site for PRO, XL, and Arktika. Everyone else requires a claim process with no published turnaround.

Can I put a different chiller on my Ice Barrel or stock tank?

Physically, often yes. Ice Barrel's 300 and 500 publish an open port spec, 3/4-inch NPT with 14 TPI threads, and stock tanks have no proprietary connection at all. But Ice Barrel's own product page only explicitly endorses its own chiller. Confirm fit and any warranty implications with the tub manufacturer in writing before buying a third-party unit like Penguin's.

Is it cheaper to fix a cold plunge chiller or buy a new one?

At current published prices, a standalone replacement chiller runs $1,949.99 to $3,999.99, depending on the brand and specs. That is almost always cheaper than replacing an entire integrated system, which is exactly why the split format's separable pricing is the format's biggest financial advantage.

Does using a third-party chiller void a cold plunge's warranty?

It can. Plunge's own warranty text, as documented in our warranty comparison checked August 16, 2026, excludes damage from installing any chiller other than its own Evolve Standard Chiller. Other brands in our directory do not publish a comparable exclusion, but silence on the topic is not the same as written permission. Ask before you plumb in anything the manufacturer did not sell you.

Which cold plunge format is more reliable?

It depends what "reliable" means to you. An integrated system is less likely to have any component fail, since one company engineered the whole thing to work together, but when the chiller does fail, the entire product is out of service until that one brand fixes it. A split setup can have either half fail independently, but a chiller failure never takes the tub itself offline: you can still plunge with ice while a replacement chiller ships.

Methodology

These guides are built from manufacturer documentation, public specifications, primary research where health claims matter, and repeated buyer questions that show up in real ownership and setup decisions.

Manufacturer responses can clarify pricing bands, warranty terms, support footprint, or common mistakes. They do not move a page up the shortlist on their own.
